Hans "Dolph" Lundgren was born in Sweden on 3 November 1957 and earned degrees in chemical engineering from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the University of Sydney by 1982, all while training in Kyokushin karate hard enough to win the European championship in 1980 and 1981. He broke through as Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV (1985), then rode that cold menace into over 80 action films — Masters of the Universe, The Punisher, three Universal Soldier entries opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme. The 2000s sent him into the direct-to-video wilderness, where he began directing his own work. Sylvester Stallone pulled him back into the light with The Expendables in 2010; Lundgren reprised both that role and Ivan Drago in Creed II (2018), and has since moved between studio projects like Aquaman and smaller films he directs himself.
