Born in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 30, 1941, Richard Bruce Cheney grew up in Casper, Wyoming, left Yale, and earned his political science degrees from the University of Wyoming before interning for a congressman and climbing into the Nixon and Ford White Houses. He served as Gerald Ford's chief of staff from 1975 to 1977, then represented Wyoming in the U.S. House from 1979 to 1989 before George H. W. Bush appointed him Secretary of Defense — a post he held through Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Out of office during the Clinton years, he chaired Halliburton and left with a $33.7 million package in 2000, the year George W. Bush chose him as running mate. Once in office, Cheney coordinated the response to the September 11 attacks and pressed the intelligence community to support the case for war in Iraq, falsely alleging Saddam Hussein held weapons of mass destruction and ties to al-Qaeda. He backed NSA warrantless surveillance and enhanced interrogation techniques, leaving office in 2009 with a 13% approval rating.
