Jordan came to Stanford in 1891 as its first president, shaping the university through 1913 after a six-year run leading Indiana University from 1885. His day job was fish: he spent his research years as an ichthyologist, cataloging species. But his public legacy tilted toward harder questions. He threw himself into eugenics, writing that cattle and humans answered to "the same laws of selection" and warning of "race-degeneration" if the wrong people bred. War appalled him less for its violence than for its genetic cost - he believed it culled the finest specimens and left the pool weakened. That antimilitarist stance kept him opposed to American entry into World War I at the start, though the logic was all Darwin and no pacifism.
