Born in Manchester in 1863 and raised in Wales, Lloyd George built his name as a fiery orator pushing land reform and Welsh devolution, winning a seat in Parliament in 1890 that he'd hold for 55 years. As Chancellor of the Exchequer under Asquith, he forced through the 1909 People's Budget — taxing land and wealth to fund the welfare state — triggering a constitutional crisis that broke the House of Lords' veto power. When Asquith faltered in 1916, Lloyd George took over as Prime Minister, tightened the war cabinet, implemented convoys against U-boats, and fought his own commanders until the Allies unified command in 1918. At the Paris Peace Conference he helped shape the postwar map, then faced rebellion in Ireland until he negotiated independence in 1921. The coalition collapsed in 1922 amid an honours-selling scandal and economic collapse; he never returned to power, led a dwindling Liberal remnant through the 1920s, and refused Churchill's cabinet in 1940.
