## Bio

Darius seized power in 522 BCE by overthrowing Bardiya, whom he claimed was an imposter named Gaumata, then spent his early reign crushing rebellions across the empire. Once secure, he turned administrator: he divided the realm into provinces run by satraps, standardized coinage and weights, made Aramaic a co-official language alongside Old Persian, and improved the roads. The changes centralized what had been a patchwork of conquests into a functioning state. He built at Persepolis, Susa, Babylon, and beyond, and carved his victories into the cliff at Mount Behistun — a text that would survive him by millennia. In 490 BCE he sent a punitive expedition west to punish Athens and Eretria for their role in the Ionian Revolt; the campaign ended at Marathon. He died in 486 BCE, leaving an empire at its territorial peak and a governance model that would shape administration for centuries.
