Born 11 November 1945, Ortega rose through the Sandinista National Liberation Front and helped overthrow Anastasio Somoza Debayle in 1979, becoming coordinator of the ruling junta and then president in 1985. His first government pursued nationalization, land reform, and literacy programs while fighting US-backed Contras throughout the 1980s and forcibly displacing 10,000 indigenous people. Defeated by Violeta Chamorro in 1990 amid economic ruin, he lost again in 1996 and 2001 before winning in 2006. His second tenure abandoned earlier leftist principles and slid toward authoritarianism: violent suppression of 2018 protests drove over 30,000 Nicaraguans to seek asylum in Costa Rica, the 2021 election saw rival candidates jailed including Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, and former revolutionary allies like Dora María Téllez and Hugo Torres Jiménez were imprisoned. He has closed universities, NGOs, and newspapers, imprisoned Catholic prelate Rolando José Álvarez Lagos, and since February 2025 rules formally as co-president with his wife Rosario Murillo.
