Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac lived as a French novelist, playwright, and duelist in the first half of the 17th century, his work part of the era's libertine literature. He published "L'Autre Monde: ou les États et Empires de la Lune" posthumously in 1657 and "Les États et Empires du Soleil" in 1662 — novels now recognized as classics of early modern science fiction, the first to depict space flight using rocket-propelled vessels and to introduce extraterrestrial Moon-Men. His blend of science and romance influenced Swift, Poe, and likely Voltaire; both Corneille and Molière borrowed from him, though only Molière faced accusations of outright plagiarism. He died on 28 July 1655. Since the 1970s his work has drawn renewed scholarly attention, but most of the world knows him through Edmond Rostand's 1897 drama — a play that mined his life for inspiration, then layered it with invention.
