## Bio

Constantine was born in Athens in 1940, the only son of Crown Prince Paul, and spent his early years in wartime exile in Egypt and South Africa before returning during the civil war. He won Olympic gold in sailing at Rome in 1960, then ascended the throne in 1964 after his father's death and married Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark. The Colonels' Coup of April 1967 left him powerless, with no loyal forces; he reluctantly inaugurated the junta, then fled in December after a failed countercoup. The junta abolished the monarchy in 1973, and a 1974 referendum — held while he was banned from campaigning in Greece — confirmed the end by nearly 70%. He lived in London for decades, briefly entangled in coup plots through 1978, before moving back to Athens in 2013. He died there in January 2023 after a stroke.
