## Bio

Born in Soli, Cilicia around 279 BC, Chrysippus moved to Athens as a young man and studied under Cleanthes, the second head of the Stoic school. When Cleanthes died around 230 BC, Chrysippus inherited the leadership and set about expanding the doctrines of Zeno of Citium into something systematically new. He built an original propositional logic to map how the universe worked and where human action fit inside a fatalistic cosmos. His ethics hinged on understanding nature first, then using that knowledge as therapy to root out the passions that crush the soul. A prolific writer, his work was so linguistically dense that even fellow Stoics struggled with it. None of his writings survived intact; only fragments remain, some discovered in the Herculaneum papyri. He died around 206 BC, but the system he forged became one of the most influential philosophical forces in the Greek and Roman world for centuries.
