# Christopher Wren

> He rebuilt London after the Great Fire took 52 churches, and left St Paul's Cathedral - the dome that still dominates the skyline - as the capstone. But the architect who shaped a city spent his early years as a mathematician and astronomer, a founder of the Royal Society whose work drew praise from Newton and Pascal.

## Bio

Wren came up through Latin and Aristotelian physics at Oxford, then turned to mathematics and astronomy serious enough to help found the Royal Society in 1660, serving as its president from 1680 to 1682. The Great Fire of 1666 gave him the commission that made him: 52 churches across the City of London, working in the English Baroque style. The signature piece was St Paul's Cathedral on Ludgate Hill, finished in 1710 after decades of construction. Modern scholarship credits much of the church design to Nicholas Hawksmoor and others in his office, but the portfolio under Wren's name also includes the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich, and the south front of Hampton Court Palace. He died in 1723, having spent half a century remaking the profile of a city.
