## Bio

Born a German noble in February 1426, Christian entered a power vacuum when King Christopher died without an heir in 1448. While Sweden elected Karl Knutsson and tried to lead the union themselves, the counts of Holstein maneuvered the Danish Privy Council into appointing Christian king of Denmark. He took Norway's throne in 1450 and Sweden's in 1457, briefly reuniting the Kalmar Union. But Sweden broke away in 1464, and his attempt to reclaim it ended in defeat at the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471 against regent Sten Sture the Elder. In 1460 he inherited Schleswig and Holstein from his maternal uncle, adding German territories to his northern crowns. He died 21 May 1481, the first king of the House of Oldenburg — a dynasty that would outlast his failed union by generations.
