## Bio

Born in Arthington in 1948, Charles Taylor studied at Bentley College in the United States before joining Samuel Doe's government in Liberia. Removed for embezzlement and jailed, he escaped prison in 1989 and made his way to Libya for guerrilla training. He returned that same year leading the National Patriotic Front of Liberia, a Libyan-backed force that ignited the First Liberian Civil War and eventually controlled large swaths of territory after Doe's execution. Following a 1996 peace deal, Taylor won the presidency in 1997, but his tenure saw violent purges, an assassination attempt on rival Roosevelt Johnson, and support for Sierra Leone's Revolutionary United Front. By 2003 he'd lost control of the countryside as the Second Liberian Civil War closed in; he resigned under international pressure and fled to Nigeria. Extradited in 2006, he was convicted in 2012 on eleven counts of aiding terror, murder, and rape—sentenced to 50 years for what the judge called some of the most brutal crimes in recorded human history.
