Medieval hagiographies place her birth around 451, daughter of an Irish clan chief and an enslaved Christian woman, fostered in a druid's household before taking vows as a consecrated virgin. She founded the abbey of Kildare and several other convents, becoming abbess and eventually patroness of poetry, healing, blacksmithing, livestock, and dairy production. The stories clustering around her — many drawn from tales of the Celtic goddess Brigid — dwarf the thin historical record, leading some to read her as Christianisation of an older figure. Her feast day, 1 February, was originally Imbolc, the pagan spring festival, now a public holiday in Ireland marked by weaving Brigid's crosses.
