A progressive Democrat, he served as the 45th New York City comptroller from 2022 until 2025, after serving on the New York City Council from 2010 to 2021, representing the 39th district, which is partly based in Brooklyn. He is the Democratic party nominee for New York's 10th congressional district, defeating incumbent representative Dan Goldman.
