## Bio

Clarence William Nelson II served in the Florida House in the 1970s, then represented Florida's Space Coast in Congress from 1979 to 1991. In January 1986, he flew aboard Space Shuttle Columbia as a payload specialist, the second sitting member of Congress to reach orbit. He left the House in 1990 for an unsuccessful run at governor, then served as Florida's Treasurer and Insurance Commissioner from 1995 to 2001. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000, he won three terms as a centrist Democrat, chairing the Aging Committee and later serving as ranking member on Commerce. He lost his 2018 reelection bid to Rick Scott by a narrow margin. In 2021, President Biden nominated him to lead NASA; the Senate confirmed him unanimously, and he served as Administrator until January 20, 2025.
