Born 11 September 1965, son of Syria's ruler Hafez al-Assad. Trained as an ophthalmologist in London through the early 1990s until his elder brother Bassel died in a 1994 car crash, pulling him back to Damascus as heir. Entered the military academy, took charge of Syria's occupation of Lebanon in 1998, and became president on 17 July 2000 after his father's death. Early hopes for reform died in 2001–2002 crackdowns that ended the Damascus Spring; his rule grew more repressive than his father's, marked by summary executions, forced disappearances, and pervasive surveillance by Ba'athist secret police. When Arab Spring protests reached Syria in 2011, he launched a crackdown that ignited civil war. Between 2011 and 2024, his forces caused over 90% of the 600,000-plus deaths, deploying chemical weapons and committing crimes against humanity documented by UN investigators. Survived only through military intervention by Iran in 2013 and Russia in 2015. In November 2024, Syrian rebels launched offensives that reached Damascus by 8 December; that morning he fled to Moscow, where Russia granted him asylum, and his regime collapsed by day's end.
