Born in France in 1798, Comte trained as a mathematician but found his question in the wreckage of the Revolution: how to rebuild social order without throne or altar. Influenced by Henri de Saint-Simon, he developed positivism — the idea that science could anchor a new moral structure — and in doing so invented sociology as a field, the capstone discipline that would map and guide human society. His system influenced John Stuart Mill, George Eliot, Harriet Martineau, and Herbert Spencer, laying track for Émile Durkheim's empirical sociology decades later. Late in life Comte pushed further, founding his Religion of Humanity, a ritualized secular faith with saints, sacraments, and no deity — strange fruit from the tree of reason. He may also have coined "altruism." He died in Paris in 1857, leaving a doctrine that seeded both modern social science and the odd dream of a church built from human devotion alone.
