Born 17 April 1952, Ražnatović spent the 1970s and 1980s on Interpol's top ten list for robberies and murders across Europe, escaping jail twice. During the Yugoslav Wars he commanded the Serb Volunteer Guard, considered one of the most feared and effective paramilitary units of the conflict. His forces carried out crimes in Eastern Bosnia including murder, pillaging, rape and ethnic cleansings. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia indicted him for crimes against humanity. Until his assassination on 15 January 2000, he remained the most powerful organized crime figure in the Balkans and the most powerful state-sponsored gangster in Serbia, with links to security contractor Avraham Golan.
