Born in the outskirts of Istakhr around 180 AD, Ardashir was sent at seven to Fort Darabgard, eventually becoming its commander. After his father Papak and brother Shapur died in quick succession, he seized control of Pars, minting coins with his own face in front and his father's behind — a quiet declaration. Tension with Parthia's Artabanus IV broke into open war, and on April 28, 224, Ardashir met the Parthian army on the Hormozdgan plain and killed the King of Kings in battle. He claimed descent from the Achaemenids and mythical shahs, wrapped his rule in Zoroastrian divine glory, and commissioned petroglyphs at Naqsh-e Rustam showing Ahura Mazda handing him kingship while enemies lay crushed below. The word "Iran" — once mythical, religious, ethnic — became under him a name for a realm, a political geography that survives in collective memory to this day.
