## Bio

Anwar el-Sadat was a senior member of the Free Officers who overthrew King Farouk I in 1952, serving twice as vice president under Gamal Abdel Nasser before succeeding him in 1970. In his 11 years as president, he departed from Nasserism's tenets, reinstituting a multi-party system and launching the Infitah economic policy. He led the October War of 1973 to reclaim the Sinai Peninsula from Israeli occupation, making him a hero across Egypt and the Arab world. Then he did the unthinkable: in 1978, he and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin signed a peace treaty brokered by Jimmy Carter, winning the Nobel Peace Prize and securing Sinai's return. The treaty was rejected by Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and the left, who felt he had abandoned Palestine, and the Arab world suspended Egypt from the Arab League from 1979 to 1989. On 6 October 1981, during a military parade in Cairo, militants led by Khalid Al-Islambuli opened fire with automatic rifles and killed him.
