## Bio

Baldassarre Cossa was born in the Kingdom of Naples and served as papal legate in Romagna in 1403. He participated in the Council of Pisa in 1408, which tried to end the Western Schism by electing a third pope, and in 1410 he succeeded Antipope Alexander V as John XXIII. At the urging of King Sigismund of Germany, he called the Council of Constance in 1413 — the same council that deposed him and Benedict XIII, accepted Gregory XII's resignation, and elected Martin V, closing the schism. He was tried for various crimes, though the charges were later disputed. Before his death in November 1419, Cossa reconciled with the Church and was made Cardinal Bishop of Frascati by the pope who replaced him.
