## Bio

Fernando Martins de Bulhões was born into wealth in Lisbon on 15 August 1195 and joined the Order of Friars Minor, taking the name Anthony. His contemporaries marked him for three things: sermons that hit like thunder, a command of scripture few could match, and a devotion to the poor and sick that never quit. He died in Padua, Italy, on 13 June 1231, at thirty-five. The Church canonized him less than a year later. On 16 January 1946, Pope Pius XII named him a Doctor of the Church, a title reserved for those whose teaching shapes the faith.
