John Anthony Burgess Wilson was born 25 February 1917 in England and became a writer who worked primarily in comic modes. A Clockwork Orange, his dystopian satire, remains his best-known novel, though he produced dozens more — the Enderby quartet, Earthly Powers, librettos, screenplays including the 1977 mini-series Jesus of Nazareth. He worked as a literary critic for The Observer and The Guardian, wrote studies of James Joyce, lectured in phonetics, and translated Cyrano de Bergerac, Oedipus Rex, and Carmen. In 1973 he was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He composed over 250 musical works and saw himself as much a composer as an author, though writing brought him far greater recognition. He died 22 November 1993.
