## Bio

Born in Rome (or possibly Alexandria) on 7 March 1908, Anna Magnani sang in night clubs to pay her way through the Academy of Dramatic Art, then landed her first film role in *The Blind Woman of Sorrento* (1934) after meeting director Goffredo Alessandrini. Her breakout came with Rossellini's *Rome, Open City* (1945), the film that ignited Italian neorealism and made her an international name. Through the next two decades she carved out a signature as "earthy lower-class women" — forceful, fearless, magnetic — in *L'Amore* (1948), *Bellissima* (1951), and *Mamma Roma* (1962). Tennessee Williams, transfixed, wrote *The Rose Tattoo* (1955) specifically for her; she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Offscreen her only child had been disabled by polio at 18 months, a private weight she carried through a public life that made her, by 1950, "one of the most impressive actresses since Garbo." She died in Rome on 26 September 1973.
