Andrzej Wajda was born 6 March 1926 and became a prominent member of the "Polish Film School," first noticed for his war trilogy: A Generation (1955), Kanał (1957), and Ashes and Diamonds (1958). Those early films set the pattern — he chronicled Poland's political and social evolution through the myths of national identity, finding the universal in the Polish struggle to maintain dignity under impossible circumstances. Four films earned Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film: The Promised Land (1975), The Maids of Wilko (1979), Man of Iron (1981), and Katyń (2007). He collected the Palme d'Or, Honorary Golden Lion, and Honorary Golden Bear along the way, and in the end an Honorary Oscar. He died 9 October 2016, having spent a career making his country's wounds visible.
