## Bio

Born into poverty in 1808, never saw the inside of a school, apprenticed as a tailor. Worked his way from alderman in Greeneville, Tennessee, through the state legislature to Congress in 1843, then governor, then U.S. senator by 1857. When Tennessee seceded in 1861 he alone among Southern senators refused to resign his seat, a defiant Unionist. Lincoln made him military governor of occupied Tennessee in 1862 and chose him as running mate in 1864 to signal reconciliation. Four months into the vice presidency Lincoln was shot and Johnson stepped into the wreckage. He moved fast to restore the Southern states without protecting the freedmen, pardoned ex-Confederates in waves, vetoed civil rights bills, opposed the Fourteenth Amendment. Congress overrode him again and again. In 1867 he tried to fire his war secretary in violation of the Tenure of Office Act; the House impeached him in 1868 and the Senate acquitted by one vote. Left office in 1869, returned to Tennessee, won a Senate seat in 1875 — the only former president to do so — and died five months later. Historians rank him among the worst.
