# Andre Agassi

> He was the rebel in denim who made tennis watchable for people who didn't care about tennis - then he crashed to No. 141, written off as done, and clawed back to finish what he started: all four majors, an Olympic gold, and the sport's first career Golden Slam on three surfaces.

## Bio

Andre Kirk Agassi was a teenage phenomenon who reached multiple major finals before breaking through at Wimbledon in 1992. Surgery sent his ranking tumbling, but he rebuilt to win the 1994 US Open and 1995 Australian Open, reaching world No. 1 for the first time. Personal troubles dragged him down to No. 141 by 1997 - low enough that most assumed he was finished at the top. A punishing training regimen brought the best stretch of his career: he completed the career Golden Slam at the 1999 French Open, reclaimed the No. 1 spot, and added four more majors before retiring after the 2006 US Open. Known as "the Punisher" for his return of serve, Agassi became the first man to win all four singles majors on three different surfaces and remains the last American man to win the French Open or the Australian Open.
