## Bio

Anders Fogh Rasmussen entered the Folketing in 1978 and spent the 1980s in ministerial posts overseeing tax and economic policy. In 1993 he published From Social State to Minimal State, a classical liberal brief against the welfare state, but his views drifted toward the centre through the decade. He took the helm of Venstre in 1998 and led a centre-right coalition to power in November 2001, backed by the Danish People's Party. His government froze tax rates, cut others, toughened immigration limits, and collapsed thirteen counties into five regions in what he called the biggest reform in thirty years. He resigned in April 2009 to become Secretary General of NATO — the first sitting prime minister to take the job since 1961 — and steered the alliance until October 2014. He now consults privately and founded the Alliance of Democracies Foundation.
