## Bio

Ambroise Paré started as a barber surgeon around 1510, a trade then regarded as rough craft, not noble science. During the Piémont campaign of 1537–1538, treating Captain Rat, he wrote the line that would define his career: "I bandaged him and God healed him" — a quiet rejection of the era's brutal orthodoxies. He went on to serve Henry II, Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III, pioneering surgical techniques that made him one of the fathers of surgery and modern forensic pathology. He invented instruments, studied anatomy, and belonged to the Parisian barber surgeon guild. He died on 20 December 1590, leaving behind a philosophy inscribed on his statue in Laval: the physician cures, nature heals.
