## Bio

Allen Welsh Dulles was a corporate lawyer at Sullivan & Cromwell before becoming the first civilian director of central intelligence and the CIA's longest-serving chief. During the early Cold War he oversaw the 1953 Iranian coup d'état, the 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état, and Project MKUltra, the agency's mind control program. The 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion failed badly enough that President John F. Kennedy forced him out and replaced him with John McCone. After Kennedy's assassination, Dulles was appointed to the Warren Commission despite having been dismissed by the president he was now tasked with investigating. The 1979 House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded the CIA as an institution wasn't involved in the killing, but debate over what the agency knew internally and how much Dulles shaped the commission's scope has never quite closed.
