## Bio

Born around 600 to Muhammad's uncle, Ali grew up in the prophet's household and was among the first to accept Islam when persecution in Mecca was severe. After the migration to Medina in 622, he married Muhammad's daughter Fatima and served as secretary, deputy, and flag-bearer. When Muhammad died in 632, Ali was passed over—Abu Bakr took leadership in his absence, then Umar, then Uthman, whose reign Ali criticized for nepotism while mediating between the caliph and angry provincials. Elected caliph after Uthman's assassination in 656, Ali immediately faced revolts: he defeated Muhammad's widow Aisha and two companions at the Battle of the Camel, fought Mu'awiya to a stalemate at Siffin, and crushed the breakaway Kharijites at Nahrawan in 658. A Kharijite assassinated him in 661, clearing the path for Mu'awiya's Umayyad dynasty. His shrine in Najaf draws millions; his words fill the Nahj al-balagha.
