# Alexios V Doukas

## Bio

Alexios V Doukas seized power in February 1204 through a palace coup, killing his predecessors as Constantinople braced for siege. Known as Mourtzouphlos — a reference to either his heavy brows or his dark demeanor — he rallied the common people and mounted a vigorous defense against the crusader army encamped outside the walls. His military efforts failed. The city fell that April, and the Fourth Crusade gutted it in one of history's great sacks. Alexios fled, only to be captured and blinded by his own father-in-law, the deposed emperor Alexios III. The new Latin occupiers executed him in December 1204, and Byzantium would not reclaim its capital for another fifty-seven years.
