## Bio

Alexander was born 1 August 1893 at Tatoi palace outside Athens, the second son of Constantine I. He became king on 11 June 1917 after the Entente Powers and Venizelist faction forced his father and elder brother into exile during World War I. With no political experience, he was stripped of authority by Venizelos and confined to his palace while the prime minister governed with Allied backing. Despite his puppet status, Alexander supported Greek forces fighting the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria, and under his nominal reign Greece's territory grew substantially following Entente victory and the early Greco-Turkish War. In 1919 he married commoner Aspasia Manos, triggering scandal that drove them abroad for months. Shortly after returning to Greece with his wife, a domestic Barbary macaque bit him. He died of sepsis on 25 October 1920, aged 27—his death raising questions about the monarchy's future and helping bring down the Venizelist government before Constantine I was restored.
