Born 30 August 1954 in Kopys, Lukashenko worked as a state farm director and served in Soviet border and army units before entering politics. Elected to the Supreme Soviet in 1990, he led an anti-corruption committee after the USSR dissolved, then won Belarus's first presidential election in 1994. He resisted shock-therapy economics, kept Soviet symbolism and state industries intact — moves supporters say spared Belarus the oligarchic collapse seen elsewhere. Referendums in 1995 and 1996 consolidated his power; he gained the authority to dismiss parliament and tightened control steadily. By 2020, disputed election results sparked the largest protests of his rule, and the EU, UK, and US ceased recognising him as legitimate president.
