# Alboin

## Bio

Alboin inherited the Lombard throne around 560, stepping into a grinding conflict with the Gepids in Pannonia. By 567 he'd allied with the Avars and crushed his rivals, but the Avars' rising strength made him uneasy. In 568 he led a coalition across the Julian Alps into an Italy left exposed by the Gothic War. Milan fell unopposed in 569; Pavia held out for three years. As the siege dragged on, his control began to fray. On 28 June 572, his foster brother Helmichis and his wife Rosamund — daughter of the Gepid king Alboin had killed — murdered him in a Byzantine-backed plot. The coup collapsed when the Lombards rallied behind a new king, and the conspirators fled to Ravenna.
