## Bio

Born in Austria-Hungary in 1889, he moved to Germany in 1913 and served in the German Army during the First World War, receiving the Iron Cross. In 1921 he became leader of the Nazi Party. A failed coup in Munich in 1923 landed him in prison, where he dictated Mein Kampf. After his release in 1924, he built popular support attacking the Treaty of Versailles and promoting pan-Germanism, antisemitism, and anti-communism. By November 1932 the Nazi Party held the most Reichstag seats. On 30 January 1933, President Hindenburg appointed him chancellor. The Enabling Act of 23 March 1933 began the transformation into a totalitarian dictatorship. On 1 September 1939 he ordered the invasion of Poland. In June 1941 he invaded the Soviet Union, then declared war on the United States. On 30 April 1945, as Soviet forces closed in on Berlin, he and Eva Braun committed suicide in the Führerbunker.
