## Bio

Abu Sufyan was a leader and merchant from the Quraysh tribe, leading trade caravans to Syria in his early career. He stood among the main opponents of Muhammad, commanding Meccan forces at the battles of Uhud in 625 and the Trench in 627. When Muhammad entered Mecca in 630, Abu Sufyan was among the first to submit, and was given a stake in the new Muslim state — fighting at the Battle of Hunayn and playing a role in the destruction of the polytheistic sanctuary of al-Lat in Ta'if. After Muhammad's death he may have governed Najran under Caliph Abu Bakr, and later supported the Muslim army at the Battle of the Yarmuk against the Byzantines in Syria. His son Mu'awiya became the first Umayyad caliph in 661, founding a dynasty that would bear Abu Sufyan's line for over two decades.
