## Bio

Ibrahim Awwad Ibrahim Ali al-Badri was born in Samarra in 1971 and earned graduate degrees in Islamic theology in the late 1990s and 2000s. After the 2003 American invasion of Iraq, he led an insurgent group and was detained at Camp Bucca in 2004 alongside al-Qaeda commanders. He rose through the ranks of the Islamic State of Iraq and became its emir in 2010. In 2013 the group expanded into Syria as ISIL, breaking with al-Qaeda's command, then rebranded as the Islamic State and proclaimed a caliphate the following June. The organization briefly held substantial territory but lost nearly all of it during his tenure. On 27 October 2019, cornered in Syria's Idlib Province during the Barisha raid, he detonated a suicide vest, killing himself and two children.
