## Bio

Abdullah bin Hussein was born in Amman on 30 January 1962, first child of King Hussein and Princess Muna. He was heir apparent as an infant, then lost the title to his uncle in 1965, spending his youth in schools abroad before joining the Jordanian Armed Forces in 1980. He rose to command the Special Forces in 1994, became a major general in 1998, and married Rania Al-Yassin in 1993, with whom he has four children. Weeks before his death in 1999, Hussein restored Abdullah as heir, and Abdullah took the throne on 7 February. When the Arab Spring erupted in 2011, he moved quickly — replacing governments, introducing reforms including proportional representation in parliament — though critics see the changes as cosmetic and power remains in his hands. The longest-serving current Arab leader, he holds custodianship of Jerusalem's Muslim and Christian sites, a role his Hashemite dynasty has held since 1924. The 2021 Pandora Papers exposed hidden wealth held through offshore entities.
